LEGO Art!

I think of Nathan Sawaya as a pop-artist of today because he uses the iconic toy bricks, Legos, as his medium. He transforms their traditional use as play and craft components into sophisticated sculptures. (Although he manages to maintain a playfulness and sense of humor in his work!)

I encourage you all to check out his portfolio... it is a fun gallery of images that really explores the endless possibilities of working with plastic bricks and appeals to all ages! He notes on his website that a full-size human figure takes 2-3 weeks of work, 15,000-25,000 bricks, and a "special plastic adhesive that [he makes] from mixing goat milk with elf tears."

Here are some images of the artist himself (showing his witty side) and some showing what he can do with this unique medium. I even threw in one related to our last class discussion!

  3. This is really good. I have seen many lego art work but this is different. It's not just about how hard it is to build it but there is a lot of thinking and concepting behind each work. He truly expressed himself. Awesome. Thanks

  4. Wow! Not only are his concepts interesting but to do them with Lego is just impressive. Maybe Lego can make one of his pieces as a retail product
