Big Boy Toys

Brian Donne also known as KAWS is a New York-based artist and designer of limited edition toys and clothing. He was first well known as a graffiti artist. KAWS is unique because he has successfully blurred the line between fine art and mass-produced merchandise. He uses the products that he designs to live in both the dine art and commercial worlds. In this work shown in GIWSL Exhibition he uses a simple toy products and supersizing them exemplifying his form of irony in entertaining both worlds. Enjoy.

  1. I absolutely love the child-like whimsy of this piece. Gigantic children's toys that somehow still seem sad because of the poses they are in. They seem lost in a way. The eyes being X'd out add a sinister feel to these works. The wood that he uses is absolutely gorgeous.

  2. Being an animator this artwork is really reminiscent of early Disney characters but I feel the "X" over the eyes and the slouching postures gives the piece a depressed, tired or zombie like feel. However this draws me to the uniqueness of the pieces even more :-)

  3. These pieces are great. I will have to agree with Justice though. To me, the "X" brings a sense of sadness to the pieces. I wonder why KAWS decided to use the "X" and have each piece slouch in some way shape or form?
