Āniwaniwa Art Project

The Āniwaniwa art project is a video and sculptural installation that was exhibited at the 2007 Venice Biennale by Rachael Rākena and Dr Brett Graham. The project grew out of research regarding the purposeful flooding of a small hydro town to make way for the development of the of the Karapiro hydro-electric power
station in the former Waikato village New Zealand in 1947.

This event shook the lives of all the inhabitants, forcing them to relocate so their previous lives could be drowned. The installation uses flooding and immersion to highlight cultural loss... the placing of this exhibit at the Venice Biennale draws a parallel to to Venice, a cultural and historical icon, which is slowly being lost to water itself.

I think it is great to see artist using their skill to create meaningful pieces that serve as a voice for social cause that lack pathos in other forms (research/historical records in this case). Read more about the work here (scroll down for english article).
