The Making of Long Bird

Cartoon Brew blog, a great source for animation-related news spots on BAFTA award winning graduate film called The Making of Long Bird. The film is directed by a student Will Anderson. The film is made as a mockumentary to produce a film using Long bird by which a fictional character that is claimed to have a historical importance. I am not going to spoil the story but the visual idea is similar to Don Hertzfeldt's Genre.

Since I have been doing research on art that deals with the concept of alternate reality, I expected this piece as one of them; although, it is not because the director clearly designed the piece as a comedy. Rather, it is a comedy taking the argument of alternate reality and twisting it in a creative and entertaining way.

  1. I like that this film comments on animation as a medium while at the same time using it to tell a story. (For instance, shots of the bird talking can be followed immediately by a close up of the animated paper texture on the bird.)

The creation vs. creator theme is like a psychological version of "Out of the Inkwell" :P
