Social Media Photography

I am a fan of photography.  My skills are limited to the iPhone and a few filters, so to see actual photographers capture an amazing moment keeps me in awe.  I like images of everyday people seen through the lens of a camera.  On FaceBook I am a fan of the images posted by Brandon on his page, Humans of New York.  I remember when the page first started it was just Brandon and his subjects.  He would just post the image and the location, nothing more. Once the images were posted people on FaceBook were free to make comments.  This is where things got upsetting to me.  People, mostly adults, would make some of the most crude and evil comments on the subjects.  Brandon would try as he may to defend his subjects, still the comments did not cease.  Now the page will post an image and give a caption of the subjects story.  Hopefully now, when an image of an elderly man in a wheelchair will not be laced with comments of  "he look disgusting", "bums need to work", "I bet he smells awful" because Brandon now gives the story that his subject is a great spirited man that misses his ability to run.
If you have a moment, please check out www.facebook.com/humansofnewyork and look at the images then read their stories.  Notice how the people are more beautiful when you see their story.  If you can not resist, go ahead and read a comment or two, but people tend to be very rude behind a keyboard.

  1. I checked out the HONY Facebook page and could not stop reading the posts below the beautiful images. Everyone has a story and an inner soul and these stories allow the public inside to see just that. This makes me feel the humanity that is really everywhere, so nice to see....and NYC as one of the most diverse cities in our country, is the perfect place to start. Thanks for this post.

  2. To me an image without a story is just pixels.Once you give your subject a story and hopefully the real story then you are capturing life. The fact that people are cruel is just a part of society these days. They hide behind their monitor and type whatever they want. A photographer who captures the problems of the society is presenting the real art of life. The work raises awareness about everything that is wrong or right and we as humans need to address it. His work does have a very strong effect on the society. Isn't that ART?
