Ethiopian Female Artists

When we think about the culture in Africa, it is impossible to separate dance from music, instruments from costumes. Everything is linked to the communities or tribes. I decided to research the African female artists, and Ethiopian women can to mind.  Ethiopian female artists speak from their hearts and souls. Whenever you look at their works of art you can see the traditional African elements, but at the same time most are talking to a modern world, especially younger female artists. So, you will see scenes showing the lives of young people in Kinshasa or Abidjan, illustrating the reality and the politics behind Africa's situation in the world. They speak about the trials and tribulations that females face in their country, and not just Ethiopia but Africa as a whole. One Ethiopian artist I found interesting was Julie Mehretu. She is known for her abstract paintings and prints. Mehretu painting and prints are densely-layered and by creating this technique draws her viewers into her work.  Her latest work includes: Grey Area, Deutsche Guggenheim, Berlin, DE 2009 and 2010 Grey Area, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY.
