What is the Proper Way to Display the Confederate Flag?

After our extremely passionate class conversation about Dread Scott's piece What is the Proper Way to Display the U.S. Flag I felt compelled to research the subject further. Briefly before the discussion was ended the topic of the Confederate Flag in art came up, which peaked my interest enough to google it. I came across this piece, Heritage, an image of the Confederate Flag juxtapose with the image of a KKK member and a lynched African American. What's interesting about this painting is that not only was it displayed here in Gainseville, Ga but unlike Dread Scott's artwork this piece was actually taken down!

  1. Yikes...even though it is art, this piece struck a nerve with me. I must be totally honest though, the Confederate Flag alone strikes a nerve with me. Very interesting piece...it saddens my spirit.

  2. Thanks for sharing this. It definitely does strike a nerve, and although it would have been a rough ride, it would've been a useful example to discuss in class. Where the American flag is concerned, it's hard for those of us in the class to see it objectively, given its overuse and the soil we are on. This demonstrates how loaded flags are in a more direct way, especially in the imagery it contains. The confederate flag is highly flammable, but I wonder what could be brought out of it if it was ab/used along the lines that the American flag has been. Great find, Justice.

  3. I am going to be the controversial one here? Is this offensive because it illustrate truths or because it is truly offensive? What are we really trying to protect?
