Matt Rhodes: The Process of a Concept Artist

I am an illustration student interested in the field of concept art as a career. To me, the conceptual stage of a project, whether a movie or video game, is often times more fascinating that the actual finished product. To look through the process of a design for a character, even un-used characters, or dismissed designs for certain key environments is like walking through a candy store. To see the development of any story, what could have happened and comparing it to what did, is a treat for anyone who likes the art of story-telling.

This is why this artist’s blogpost interested me. Matt Rhodes is concept artist for the video game company Bioware. He has worked on character design and concept design on Bioware’s Mass Effect and Dragon Age series. In this post, he displays some early concepts of what could have been for these franchises. He also gives an explanation for each image, an fascinating perspective of the artist and his process in the field.

  1. I've seen this concept artist come up a few times over the last week. It's always nice to see the pre-production process for games and/or movies because it gives a lot of insight into the decisions made during the creative process.

  2. This is EXTREMELY AWESOME work Amy! I'm an animation student with a focus in concept art so this hit a chord with me. I've intern at a video game company as a concept artist and hope to do the the same in the animation industry. The process is equally exciting to me as well. There's something about getting a character bio or premise for a story and the brainstorming process needed to give the look and feel that matches the story. The development process is so extensive from gathering reference material to deciding the color options that it really helps you see the artists vision. I'm glad you posted this Amy:-)
